Christmas In Brooklyn Posted By: Bob and Penny Lord

For those of you who do not know our story, Bob was born in the Bronx and I in Brooklyn. We were city children who lived in a small town called a neighborhood. Customs from different parts of the world filled and permeated our little world. Often a neighborhood became like a little country unto itself, as members of families and friends from the "old country" moved close to each other. My family was originally from Sicily, Italy, as were most the people on our block. Many of our neighbors did not even know the English language, so out of necessity we were a multi-lingual society. But we were more like a big family, our traditions making us one. Christmas, like all holidays and Feast Days was a neighborhood thing, a shared experience, what with doors open, the fragrance of sauce and pizza filling the air, the freshly baked Italian cookies on a plate by an open door for one to bring home to share with the family. We were all poor, but I never felt poor. I always felt like a princess in wonderful wonderland.

Paraffin Heaters: The Alternative Way Of Heating This Winter Posted By: David Khan

Sometimes, what was old, is new again, and that applies to portable heaters. Before central heating systems and natural gas or electric heat, there were kerosene heaters. With the high cost of energy today, portable heaters are making a come back with improved technology, for the heaters and the fuel. What is a Paraffin Heater? They are synonymous with kerosene heaters, and are used to heat a particular room or area of the house. They may be portable units that can be moved to different rooms depending on the current need. Paraffin heaters may also be permanently affixed and vented to the outside. Newer models have safety features that monitor oxygen levels and will shut the heater off, if the oxygen level drops too low. Many are also designed to shut off if they are tipped over, to help prevent a fire. Small children and animals should never be left alone in a room with a kerosene heater, due to the high operating temperature of the unit. Most heaters come with a safety grill, but it will still be very hot to the touch. Fuel Paraffin liquid can be either standard heating oil or K-1 paraffin oil.

Kerosene Conservation Helps Secure Crude Oil Reserves Posted By: Freddy Flintsone

Discovery of new oil reserves is not keeping pace with consumption and the UK is not exempt from rising kerosene prices posed by the diminishing supply. The long term answers will come from cost effective new energy sources, but the short term will require learning a variety of ways to conserve kerosene fuel. Kerosene suppliers are a good source of information on conserving and are usually happy to make suggestions. Crude Oil Reserves Based on 2007 figures, the UK has oil reserves of about seven years, which explains the imports. The world has reserves to last roughly 43 years provided consumption remains flat. Unfortunately, between 2001 and 2007 worldwide energy use grew by 12% and that is likely to accelerate, with the aggressive growth taking place in China and India. Although it is safe to say more reserves will be found, the likelihood of major finds is highly unlikely. Conservation Opportunities Appliances Take a hard look at the appliances and decide if it is time to replace an old inefficient water heater or furnace. If they are over ten years old, the reduction in energy usage may well pay for a new appliance in just a few years.

Why Heating Water And Circulating It Under A Floor Is An Eco Friendly, Efficient Way To Heat A Home Posted By: Mike S Williams

Under floor heating water is water that is circulated under the floor of a home or commercial building. The water is heated by a boiler which could be fueled by one of several options such as oil, propane, natural gas, wood, coal, solar energy, geothermal energy, etc. The water is circulated throughout the system using a pump. The system is typically a closed loop system so that the water does not need to be replenished due to loss from evaporation. Unless the area to be heated is very small, the area is broken up into zones with the use of a multi-zone manifold. This helps to keep the water warm on its trip through the circuit as well as relieving undue stress on the pump. The zones can be individual rooms each with their own thermostat allowing the temperature to be controlled in each room individually. This provides for a reduction in energy bills because rooms are not being heated when they are not being used. Under floor heating is extremely efficient as opposed to the systems that blow warm air around.

How Under Floor Heating Systems Can Be Efficient And Environmentally Friendly For Any Home Posted By: Mike S Williams

The use of under floor heating systems is becoming more common because it can easily be adapted to use any environmentally friendly source of heat such as geothermal or solar. It can even use the current central heating system or the water heater in the existing structure. The other option is to have a brand new heating system installed. Antifreeze can be used in the system but obviously it can't be tied to the home's water heater. It can be used in either residential or commercial structures. It can even be used in concrete floors with today's technology in plastics. This is handy to know because concrete has a nasty habit of corroding metals commonly used for pipes such as copper, steel or iron. An underfloor heating system works by circulating water through a boiler that is fueled with gas, oil, solar energy, electricity, geothermal or whatever the mind dreams up. The water is then sent through the home in a closed loop system under the floor. The water comes back through the boiler to be heated up and continue the circuit once again.
